RESUMO

A new natural product, 1-(6-methylsalicyloyl)glycerol (1) was isolated from the culture extract of the stony coral-derived Micromonospora sp. C029. The structure of 1 was determined by extensive analysis of 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic data. The absolute configuration was determined to be S by comparison of specific rotation with synthetic (R)- and (S)-1. Compound 1 showed weak antimicrobial activity against Kocuria rizhophila. Structurally related benzoyl glycerol is not reported from actinomycetes, suggesting that isolation of actinomycetes from little studied environments should be important for the discovery of novel natural products.

The brown macroalgal genus Lobophora plays important ecological roles in many marine ecosystems. This group has received much attention over the past decade, and a considerable number of new species have been identified globally. However, our knowledge of the genus diversity and ecology along south-east Asian coasts are still limited. Given the growing body of research that uses a combination of molecular and morphological data to identify cryptic species, this study investigates the diversity of Lobophora in the western Gulf of Thailand using morphological and molecular data, as well as their interactions with scleractinian corals. A total of 36 Lobophora specimens were collected from 15 sites in the western Gulf of Thailand and used for molecular and morphological analyses. One mitochondrial (cox3) and two chloroplast (psbA and rbcL) genes were amplified and sequenced for molecular phylogenetic analyses. Based primarily on phylogenetic evidence, two new species were formally described, L. chumphonensis sp. nov. and L. thailandensis sp. nov. Additionally, L. lamourouxii was newly recorded from Thailand. Two new lineages of Lobophora obscura were identified, L. obscura12 and L. obscura13. Among the Lobophora species identified, three were found in interaction with corals, the most notable of which was the massive coral Porites. Lobophora chumphonensis sp. nov. only interacted with Porites by growing on bare coral skeleton between Porites colonies. Furthermore, L. obscura13 was observed under the branching coral Pocillopora. Our findings revealed that Lobophora presented both effects and absence of effects on coral. A thorough understanding of Lobophora diversity and ecology is essential for ongoing and future research on coral-macroalgal ecological relationships.

Two new marine actinobacteria, designated as J2-1T and J2-2T, were isolated from a coral, Favites pentagona, collected from Rayong Province, Thailand. The taxonomic positions of the two strains were identified based on polyphasic taxonomy. Based on morphological characteristics and chemotaxonomy, strains J2-1T and J2-2T were identified as members of the genus Streptomyces and Kineosporia, respectively. Strains J2-1T and J2-2T showed the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Streptomyces broussonetiae T44T (98.62 %) and Kineosporia babensis VN05A0415T (98.08 %), respectively. Strain J2-1T had chemotaxonomic properties resembling members of the genus Streptomyces. ll-Diaminopimelic acid, glucose and ribose were detected in the whole-cell hydrolysate. Diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylinositolmannoside, unidentified aminolipid and five unidentified phospholipids were detected as the polar lipids. The major cellular fatty acids were C16 : 0 iso, C15 : 0 anteiso, C15 : 0 iso, C16 : 0, C17 : 0 anteiso, C14 : 0 iso and C17 : 0 iso. Strain J2-2T a showed similar cell composition to members of the genus Kineosporia. Both isomers of ll- and meso-diaminopimelic acid were detected in the peptidoglycan. Arabinose, galactose, madurose and xylose were observed in the whole-cell hydrolysate. The polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylinositol mannoside, phosphatidylcholine, an unidentified phospholipid and an unidentified glycolipid. The major cellular fatty acids were C16 : 0, C18 : 1 ω9c, C18 : 0 10-methyl, tuberculostearic acid, C18 : 0 and C17 : 0. Both strains could be distinguished from their closely related type strains according to their phenotypic characteristics. Comparative genome analysis indicated the delineation of two novel species based on digital DNA-DNA hybridization and average nucleotide identity values, which were below 70 and 95 %, respectively. The names proposed are Streptomyces corallincola sp. nov. (J2-1T=TBRC 13503T=NBRC 115066T) and Kineosporia corallincola sp. nov. (J2-2T=TBRC 13504T=NBRC 114885T).

Microplastic contamination in the environment is a global problem, as evidenced by the increasing amount of research worldwide. To our knowledge, this study is the first to investigate the microplastic distribution in Bandon Bay, one of the most important maricultural areas of Thailand. Water and sediment samples from the Tapi-Phumduang River system (n = 10) and Bandon Bay (n = 5) were collected. Water sampling at the river mouth was carried out during a complete tidal cycle to estimate the microplastic flux to the bay during the wet season. Moreover, two commercial bivalve species grown in the bay, the green mussel (Perna viridis) and lyrate Asiatic hard clam (Meretrix lyrata), were analyzed. More items of microplastics were found in the river system than in the bay. During the tide cycle, one-third of the microplastics entering the bay were washed back upstream during high tide. This backflow consisted mainly of larger microplastics. The average daily load of microplastics to the bay was 22.4 × 109 items day-1. The load during low tide was approximately 4-5 times higher than that during high tide. The overall accumulation of microplastics in the bottom sediments of the river and in the bay was similar (p < 0.05). Green mussels showed significantly higher contamination with microplastics than clams. Notably, the small-sized shellfish contained more particles (items/g) than the large ones (p < 0.05). Fibers were detected in virtually all samples: water (98%), sediment (94%), mussels (100%), and clams (95%). Among these, microfibers (<1 mm) were detected in water (71%), sediment (63%), green mussels (63%), and clams (52%). Blue and white particles were the two most frequently observed colors, while the most dominant polymers were rayon, followed by polypropylene (PP) or polyethylene (PE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and nylon. To this end, we posit that river discharge was a significant source of microplastics in Bandon Bay, with minor additional contributions from fishing and mariculture activities within the bay. Ultimately, these microplastics may end up in the sediments and living organisms.

To prevent future zoonoses, governments must establish effective legislation addressing wildlife trade, protection of habitats, and reduction of the wildlife-livestock-human interface.

Given predicted increases in urbanization in tropical and subtropical regions, understanding the processes shaping urban coral reefs may be essential for anticipating future conservation challenges. We used a case study approach to identify unifying patterns of urban coral reefs and clarify the effects of urbanization on hard coral assemblages. Data were compiled from 11 cities throughout East and Southeast Asia, with particular focus on Singapore, Jakarta, Hong Kong, and Naha (Okinawa). Our review highlights several key characteristics of urban coral reefs, including "reef compression" (a decline in bathymetric range with increasing turbidity and decreasing water clarity over time and relative to shore), dominance by domed coral growth forms and low reef complexity, variable city-specific inshore-offshore gradients, early declines in coral cover with recent fluctuating periods of acute impacts and rapid recovery, and colonization of urban infrastructure by hard corals. We present hypotheses for urban reef community dynamics and discuss potential of ecological engineering for corals in urban areas.

Corals evolved by establishing symbiotic relationships with various microorganisms (the zooxanthellae, filamentous algae, cyanobacteria, bacteria, archaea, fungi and viruses), forming the 'coral holobiont'. Among them, the endolithic community is the least studied. Its main function was considered to be translocation of photo-assimilates to the coral host, particularly during bleaching. Here, we hypothesize that (i) endolithic algae may show similar primary production rates in healthy or bleached corals by changing their pigment ratios, and therefore that similar production and translocation of organic matter may occur at both conditions and (ii) diazotrophs are components of the endolithic community; therefore, N2 fixation and translocation of organic nitrogen may occur. We tested these hypotheses in incubation of Porites lutea with 13C and 15N tracers to measure primary production and N2 fixation in coral tissues and endoliths. Assimilation of the 13C atom (%) was observed in healthy and bleached corals when the tracer was injected in the endolithic band, showing translocation in both conditions. N2 fixation was found in coral tissues and endolithic communities with translocation of organic nitrogen. Thus, the endolithic community plays an important role in supporting the C and N metabolism of the holobiont, which may be crucial under changing environmental conditions.

Cheewarat Printrakoon, Thamasak Yeemin, and Paul Valentich-Scott (2016) The objective of this study was to examine the ecology of coral boring bivalves from four islands southeast of Ko Chang, Trat Province, Thailand. A total of 11 bivalve families containing 18 species were recorded in the survey, including six reported for this first time in the region. Members of the Mytilidae comprised the highest bivalve diversity with five species recorded. The five most abundant species were Leiosolenus lima (Jousseaume in Lamy), Lithophaga teres (Philippi), Botula cinnamomea (Gmelin), Coralliophaga coralliophaga (Gmelin), and Gastrochaena cuneiformis Spengler. Ecological analysis showed that Ko Bai Dung had the highest density of boring bivalves, with 196.29 ± 118.24 individual/ m2. Density of coral boring bivalves was variable; the highest density was recorded for Coralliophaga coralliophaga (85.18 ± 74.35 individual/m2) at Ko Bai Dung. The highest diversity of boring bivalves was found on Ko Phrao Nok, and in dead coral. Multivariate analyses did not reveal a clear differences in the boring bivalve community composition between sites, or with coral age, or with coral species, however dead coral was well-grouped at 50% similarity. The number of species and number of specimens of boring bivalves in this study was significantly positively correlated with coral age. The maximum number of boring bivalve specimens was found in the oldest coral (11 years old) and in dead Porites host corals. Following the same trend of all dominant boring bivalves, corals more than nine years old showed the highest frequency distribution and the largest shell length. The distribution of shell height frequency showed Leiosolenus lima and Lithophaga teres had more variation in shell height than the other five dominant boring bivalve species. Endolithic bivalves are one of the main bioeroders in the coral biome. The ecologic data presented in this study can be used as one indicator of coral reef status, including bioerosion and nutrient recycling in coral ecosystems.
